Electrolysis Hair Removal in Prahran, South Yarra & Throughout Melbourne
Electrolysis is a hair removal method that has been around for centuries to remove unwanted hair permanently from the body and face.
At Epilase, we provide this treatment for anyone with facial or body hair that is not suitable for laser hair removal ie. white, blonde, red or grey hair
A very fine sterile probe is inserted into each individual hair follicle followed by an electrical current to destroy the stem cells and blood supply that allow the hair to grow. You may experience a heat sensation or mild sting from the current which allows the hair to detach from the follicle and slide out with the aid of tweezers.
- Do not wax treatment area at least 2 weeks prior to treatment
- Do not shave or use depilatory creams few days prior to your treatment
- You may cut long hair short with scissors
- Avoid laser hair removal or other light based skin treatments, skin facials 2 weeks prior to treatment
Does it hurt?
You may feel a slight “sting” like sensation with each follicle being treated. Skin may feel warm after a treatment.
In most cases, clients tolerate the treatment well. However, you may wish to apply an anaesthetic cream such as ‘Emla’ to numb the area 30min prior to your treatment.
How long is each treatment?
Treatment time depends on what area is being treated and the amount of hair present. Hair on chin for example may take approx. 10-15min. Treatment may be required on a fortnightly basis to target hair at its growth phase.
How many treatments will I need?
Due to the cycle of hair growth, several sessions are required to permanently stop regrowth of the hair. When the hair is in its growing phase (Anagen), only then treatment with electrolysis is most effective in destroying the cells responsible for the growth of the hair.
If all cells are not destroyed the hair will grow back finer, softer and lighter. With continued treatments, it will eventually result in the follicle being unable to produce another hair.
Electrolysis in comparison to other treatment modalities is classified by the FDA as a permanent hair removal method.
What is the interval between treatments?
Treatment can be performed on a fortnightly basis.
There are no permanent side effects of electrolysis, only some temporary redness and slight swelling immediately following treatment. These side effects subside within minutes to a couple of days. You may wish to use a soothing lotion such as aloe vera (can purchase from Epilase) or an ice pack to reduce heat and swelling.
- Avoid picking on skin post treatment as skin is compromised and an infection may arise
- Avoid scrubs, use of AHA’s, skin treatments, Laser treatments or any form of facials for at least 2 weeks post treatment
- Avoid direct sun exposure for 24hrs
- Must wear sunblock with zinc oxide or SPF 30+ every day
